Setting direct health concerns aside, it has now become clear that coronavirus will not pass without leaving some long-term business and economic consequences in its wake. While it might be tempting to focus on just staying afloat in the moment, putting out the fires as and when they threaten to appear, it’s crucial to plan for the future of your business and be fully prepared for what will come next. Here's a helpful eight-step guide to getting started.

1. Find leads and customers ahead of time
As many businesses are going to be focusing on the here and now, struggling to maintain normal running operation, this could be your chance to build a new network of prospective customers. Putting time and effort into generating new leads now will ensure that you have a pool of potential customers to rely on once things have calmed down.

In addition, your leads should have increased confidence in you as a business. If you’re looking for new clients at a time when most of your competition is going through a crisis, you’re showing your customers you’re on top of things.

2. Adapt your services to the current situation
In many parts of the world, the general public being advised to stay at home poses serious difficulties to businesses. If your company follows the B2C model and relies on face-to-face, in-store interaction with clients, this presents a serious threat, particularly in the long run.

So get creative and brainstorm different ways you can still deliver your service or products. One obvious example is that of restaurants and cafes operating home-delivery only or offering free delivery, discounts, weekly or monthly subscription-style deals and other incentives helps to stay ahead of the competition.

This is why it’s important to be flexible and adapt your services so that they are not only useful during the outbreak, but remain the best choice once everything has calmed down.

5. Identify the challenges to your business
In order to strategize effectively and implement all of the above points, a good starting place is a list of challenges your business might face. It’s crucial to strategize for different scenarios and take every possibility into account.

Consider everything from disruption of supply chains to difficulties in communication, generating customers and competition with other businesses in your market. Regardless of how you think the outbreak is going to pan out and how it might affect you, plan for every conceivable scenario, including the worst you can imagine.

6. Plan solutions with several scenarios in mind
Once you have your list of challenges, it’s time to develop several solutions to each. It’s impossible to accurately simulate what’s exactly going to happen, so it’s better to put the work into preparation and strategizing now than be caught unawares and unprepared.

7. Use alternative solutions to maintain daily operation
If it hasn’t done so already, coronavirus will likely disrupt your travel arrangements, communication, staffing and perhaps even supply chains eventually. Instead of simply cancelling business plans, events and trips, brainstorm creative alternatives and solutions.

For example, if you’re due to receive a visit to your office or production area — for instance, from a prospective customer — they might be unwilling to make the trip given the current state of affairs. Offer them an alternative, such as a FaceTime meeting. Or if the main purpose of their visit was to see your premises, send pre-recorded footage.

8. Implement tech upgrades to keep communication flowing
With the potential threat of most, if not all, of your staff working from home at some point, it’s important to plan ahead how to ensure communication will remain as efficient as possible. Phone calls and chats are not going to be fast enough, especially with all the home-life distractions.

Consider using online platforms for your planning and comms, Google Docs for collaborative documents that everyone can edit and comment on, Asana or similar software for business planning that keeps everyone on the same page and the likes of Coggle or Stormboard for brainstorming and file-sharing.

Start introducing these now, so that if worst comes to worst and everyone’s working from home, they’ll be comfortable and proficient with the new methods of communication.

There’s no telling how this situation will unfold. Things might return to normal within a few weeks, or we might be facing a worldwide recession a year down the road. For businesses of all kinds, it’s important not to give up, to have a firm strategy in place and to remain adaptable and flexible in order to remain successful.

How to Position Your Startup to Weather the Storm
While the global health crisis has sparked an economic recession, innovative entrepreneurs can find ways to leverage the situation to move their businesses forward.

Over the course of the past several months, we have entered the worst recession in recent history, and the uncertainty is having a ripple effect on entrepreneurs everywhere. Businesses are plotting their next moves and conserving cash in every way possible, hoping to survive the next few months however they can.

The dominos are falling fast. Jobless claims are through the roof, and countless retailers will likely go out of business. It’s not all gloom and doom, though. Venture capitalists are still sitting on record amounts of uninvested cash — an estimated $189 billion as of last summer, to be exact. They are currently holding their money close to their chests, but they will put that capital to work once the dust settles.

A similar phenomenon occurred during the 2008 recession. Seed funding was the first thing to scale back as venture capitalists invested roughly half of what they were investing each quarter just two years prior. The venture market faced depressed valuations for 18 to 24 months, and startup growth slowed because they had less to spend. Things were tight for about a year, but seed funding snapped back. Once the storm blew over, there was capital (known as dry powder) that needed to be put to work.

The short-term outlook today is worse than in 2008, because the global economy has shut down. Companies that weather the storm will likely have open-field running for the next few years as this will squeeze out any competitors that aren’t capital-efficient.

Unlike the 2008 crash, a systemic failure or an overvalued asset didn’t cause this crisis. This means a more positive midterm outlook as there is a pent-up demand for businesses — especially tech. According to IDC, by 2022, more than 60 percent of global GDP will be driven by digital products. This crisis is likely to speed that up and push the percentage even higher.

In the long-term, I’m more apprehensive. There is no way to predict what might cause our next economic failure, but we’ll be in for a rough time. If that failure happens too soon, the outlook is bleak because this has essentially exhausted our quantitative easing efforts — and we have already lowered interest rates to near zero. These measures will keep things afloat in the short to mid term, but there might not be enough levers to pull if things get messy in the future. Only time will tell.

You can’t predict the future, but you can focus on the opportunities at hand while we wait for recovery. This is not a time to shut down and quit; it’s a time to leverage the situation to move your businesses forward. Prepare your company for an upcoming tailwind by following these three tips:

1. Maintain a strong cash position.
Take several measures to protect your cash. Work with your vendors and banks to stretch payment terms; speak with your finance team about pulling bank lines and exploring zero-interest credit cards; and have a contingency plan in place with triggered events based on cashflow. Beyond that, many people are working online because of shelter-in-place and remote work orders, which creates the opportunity for you to consider what you can sell to meet their needs. 

You may also consider applying for disaster loan assistance from the U.S. Small Business Administration, and keep an eye out for legislation that could affect your company. For example, the $2 trillion stimulus bill will allow companies such as Square, PayPal and Intuit to offer emergency lending to small businesses.

2. Identify new target industries and see where you fit.
A handful of industries are doing quite well during the coronavirus pandemic. For example, grocery stores and food delivery services are seeing huge spikes in sales and growth while restaurants close their dining areas and people find ways to order takeout. So are tele health brands, ecommerce companies, video game developers, internet service providers and data centers and cloud providers. Demand will continue to expand in these areas over time, offering an opportunity for your company to swoop in and provide a much-needed product or service.

You also could follow in the footsteps of companies such as Tesla and Fiat Chrysler by temporarily offering a product that helps slow the spread and save lives. Things are changing by the day, so watch the headlines and pay attention to what other businesses are doing in light of the crisis to understand how they could help you — or you could help them. Contact your local government and hospitals to learn more.

3. Make self-care a priority.
As you work hard to keep your company afloat, remember to also budget time for health, wellness and self-care. This is an excellent opportunity to embrace meditation, and countless apps can help guide you toward a healthier, more positive mindset. Cooking, cleaning and other household chores might also distract you from feelings of anxiety and uncertainty.

While you’re at it, remember to exercise. According to Harvard Health, just 15 minutes of daily jogging or walking can reduce your risk of depression. After running cross-country and track in college, I put running on the back burner when my entrepreneurial career took off. That changed, though, when I found myself overwhelmed and overworked. Running has become my therapy, and it helps me regain control of my thoughts, reflect on important decisions and achieve mental clarity — all of which are key to showing up for your startup as your best, most passionate self.

The crisis illustrates why it’s more important than ever to build economically sound, agile companies that can withstand economic volatility. For the foreseeable future, the days of burning gobs of cash to grow at all costs with no path to profitability are gone — but sustainable growth will be the new hot topic.

Across all industries, this uncertain world and economic slowdown can still spawn incredible companies that shape our future. Some of the world’s most impactful companies were created during hard times. So hunker down, be vigilant and stay positive. Light is at the end of the tunnel.

Bulan Mei dan Jun sesuatu tahun semasa sebagai "tingkap" untuk kita mengetahui bagaimana kehidupan perjalanan kita pada tahun hadapannya. Daripada pemerhatian Dato Eddy sejak 2006 lagi menyaksikan fenomena sebegini. Kini kita telah sampai ke Mei 2020 dalam situasi musibah pandemik, bagaimanakah perjalanan kita pada tahun hadapan nanti? Kerana itu, adalah amat penting untuk kita membangunkan sesuatu yang positif dalam bulan Mei dan Jun tahun ini supaya perjalanan kita pada tahun hadapan adalah positif.

Antaranya membina energi positif. Dalam bulan Mei 2020 terdapat 9 tarikh energi yang punyai pola 769 kekayaan. Ikhtiar energi suoaya perjalanan kita pada tahun 2021 dilimpahi dengan kekayaan.

Jika dulu2, kanak2 yang ada pola 769 dibiarkan tak kaya kerana mustahil mereka mampu kaya pada usia kanak-kanak. Tetapi zaman kini, kanak seusia 5 tahun pun boleh jadi jutawan. Dengan berpola 769 dalam petak tarikh lahirnya berpotensi baik. Walhal kanak2 ini mempunyai penyakit Cerebal Palsy. Potensi tidak mengenal usia, rupa atau penyakit yang dihidapi.

Rupa-rupanya ibu nya mempunyai kilang buat kuih di sebelah rumahnya. Sebenarnya, potensi kita adalah menjalankan kerjaya/ perniagaan yang diwarisi daripada generasi terdahulu tetapi kali ini kita buat dengan lebih moden. Tidak semestinya perlu ikut bulat2 tetapi ikut bidang/ bisnes yang diceburi oleh ibu ayah atuk nenek kita. Contohnya, jika atuk kita seorang nelayan tidak semestinya kita mesti jadi nelayan juga tetapi boleh mengusahakan ternakan kolam ikan air tawar atau membuka pasaraya menjual sejukbeku makanan laut.

Program Ikhtiar Energi Pakej Bulan Mei 2020 telah dibuka. Kali ini ditawarkan 9 kali program (berbanding 7 kali program biasa) pada yuran 7 kali program. Menariknya bulan Mei 2020 adalah bulan Ramadan dan kemudiannya Syawal (bulan yang baik) dan kesemua tarikh ada POLA 769 (Kekayaan). Satu tarikh energi jatuh pada Hari Raya Aidil Fitri pertama (jangkaan). Jom, kita bina semula energi rezeki dan aura kekayaan setelah dilanda musibah pandemik.

Bulan Mei 2020 adalah "penentuan" untuk perjalanan kita pada tahun 2021 nanti.  Berdasarkan pemerhatian Dato Eddy Rosyadie, bulan Mei dan Jun merupakan petunjuk untuk perjalanan tahun akan datang. How Entrepreneurs Can Win During A Recession
Be strategic today, and you can lay the foundation for giant gains tomorrow.

The COVID-19 pandemic ended a record 11-year bull run of the U.S. stock market. This, coupled with an oil price crash instigated by Saudi Arabia and Russia, has all the signs of an imminent global recession. Depending on who you trust with your forecasts, most experts are predicting a global contraction that can last anywhere between 6 months up to 2 years.

The word ‘recession’ strikes fear in the hearts of startups and established businesses alike—and for good reason. Long-running studies from dozens of countries indicate that global recessions drive a doubling in bankruptcy and unemployment rates, as well as a sharp decrease in the number of new businesses formed. On the other hand, new evidence is now showing that—over the longer run—recessions do not impact the eventual success of a business. In a study by the Kauffman foundation, 8,464 U.S. companies were analysed against a backdrop of nine recessions, and found that their propensity to do an initial public offering was not impacted by economic contractions. In fact, powerhouse tech and non-tech firms such as Apple, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, Walt Disney and Krispy Kreme can trace their origins back to various recessions.

As part of my consulting practice, I work closely with entrepreneurs, CEOs, and PE and VC boards over a wide range of corporate strategy and organizational change topics. These days, their number one concern is about making the right strategic calls now so as to better navigate the upcoming recession and come out of the other end poised for growth. To ensure that there was enough scientific rigour in my feedback to them, I conducted extensive research literature review, analysed dozens of companies that bounced back successfully from the 2008 financial crisis, and interviewed several entrepreneurs on how they are adapting to these changing times successfully.

Here are the four insights that stood out the most:

1. One strategy does not fit all, especially for smaller firms
Given the current news cycle, it is easy to imagine that a recession hits all businesses equally, resulting in similar levels of underperformance. Studies show that this assumption could not be further from the truth. Some businesses do suffer from a sales downturn thanks to a recession, while others end up with a sharp increase in sales.

Furthermore, the popular doctrine of small businesses being especially vulnerable to recessions is open for debate as well. What small businesses lack in resources and cash, they more than make up for in terms of speed and flexibility. We can be sure of one thing: Irrespective of size, your company’s ability to adapt quickly is your biggest defence against a recession.

Therefore, make sure you are fully aware of the forces that your business will be exposed to during this time and then pick your battles strategically. You can do so by tracking the health of your biggest customers and their changing needs, investigating the stability and relevance of your existing supplier base as well as deepening your understanding of your company’s competitive advantage in this new world order.

Work with an independent sounding board—say, an advisor or a mentor—who can analyse and co-create your new strategy with you. The last thing you want to do is to make big decisions with a lens of either excessive pessimism or optimism without checks and balances for either in place.

2. Aim for transformational jumps in productivity—not just cutting costs
Recessions are usually triggers for large-scale layoffs and cost cutting, irrespective of sectors and company sizes. In fact, as of now, the US is tracking towards historic unemployment levels in the face of the COVID-19 lockdown. Ironically, in research done on recessions by HBS, it becomes quite clear that following a single-minded, "cost cut only" strategy is a recipe for disaster.

This is because such an approach assumes that talent, technology, and opportunity would be easily available for a company once the recession is over. This is usually never the case, and a company that only follows a cost-cutting strategy will struggle to regain capabilities and capacity when the economy returns to normal. That's why performance never bounces back to pre-recession levels.

It is much better to gear up your organization for a sharp jump in productivity during this lull period. So how do you begin? Start off with the customer. Which of your current customer-facing operations can be simplified or digitized to deliver products and services faster, cheaper, and better? Can you simplify propositions and sunset underperforming product lines? Can you invest in technology, equipment or training that will improve performance reasonably quickly?

Such a strategy will not only lower your cost structure, but will help you leapfrog your competition thanks to better-quality products and services. During this process, you will need to let go of some employees who you no longer need. However, these number are likely to be lower than what you would have lost if you were just cost cutting.

3. Be strategic when discount shopping for assets
Companies, buildings, equipment, and land—all of this become cheaper to acquire during a recession. However, just because an asset is cheap does not mean you should buy it. For example, retail stores losing sales to ecommerce companies should not go on a shopping spree to buy more low-cost store locations—even if the prices appear to be a steal.

Such purchases will become a drain on cash and managerial focus when the economy bounces back, creating a drag on your company’s performance. Instead, such retailers could use this time and resources to invest in upgrading their technology stack and digital talent. In the process, they'll accelerate their shift towards an ecommerce-centric business model.

4. Selectively increase R&D and marketing spend
As with the point above, doubling down on all pre-recession R&D and marketing spend is not a good idea. However, if done selectively, increased spends in these areas are incredible drivers for growth. When it comes to R&D, increase spend on projects that help you double down on your relevant competitive advantage in the new world order.

For example, if you are a furniture producer and your customers have become both fashion- and price-sensitive thanks to the recession, now would be a good time to invest your R&D budget in to exploring new material types and production equipment that can help deliver lower priced, but fashionably made pieces of furniture. On the other hand, doubling down on R&D regarding premium materials would not be such a good idea.

The same holds true for marketing spend. If it is not relevant to solving customer problems from the lens of the economic crises, do not put marketing dollars behind it. If your spend is solving customer problems, double down quickly for market share gain.

A good example is Hyundai’s Genesis, which became a runaway success during the financial crises thanks to a clever marketing campaign and a sharp positioning towards ‘accessible luxury’—something the other car manufacturers simply could not follow at that time. Hyundai won the prestigious North American Car of the year award in 2009 and gained record market share and increased shipments in the face of an otherwise shrinking automotive market.

The best time to change is now
Recessions are a tough time for most businesses and many companies will fold during this period. Recessions are, however, also an incredible time to drive change in your organization—for the better. We all have many things to improve on or many promising opportunities to explore, but we hadn't had the time to do so before. With the status quo effectively now over, we should use this time to take some creative risks and take our companies’ long-term performance up a notch.

    Salam cikgu, lupa nak cerita, saya baru mula jual jamu..cust kalangan kawan ofis aje, tapi hari ni customer lain mula mencari saya. Order byk juga. Dan dua customer pertama today kerja di mindef n bukit aman. Seolah2 bayangan apa yg u bagi dulu.

    Masih Cikgu ingat pd saya yg membuat temujanji dgn Cikgu 11 Feb 2011 yg lepas di Petronas Lebuhraya Sg Besi? Dah sebulan lebih pertemuan saya dgn Cikgu.

    Alhamdulillah banyak perubahan berlaku pd saya dr sudut positif. Energy saban hari makin ok, sejak bln Mac ni setiap hari saya keluar rumah utk buat sale. Syukur hampir hari2 saya dpt close. Dahulu nak dpt close setiap minggu pun susah, nak close RM20K sebulan pun tak pernah mimpi.

    Setakat hari ini saya dah dapat close hampir RM50K. Mungkin bagi perunding unit trust yg lain RM50K tu terlalu sikit, tapi bagi saya yg berada di zon vacum star ia amat besar.

    Assalamualaikum En. AD apa khabar? ... berikut adalah pendapatan saya beberapa bulan sebelum keluar rumah mencari rezeki ikut arah mata angin yang betul.

    Income bulanan di pejabat Kota Tinggi sebelum ini adalah antara RM3500 hingga RM4700 sebulan kadang-kadang hanya RM2500 sebulan, malah adakalanya 17 haribulan baru dapat bayaran dari client  tapi sekarang Alhamdulillah semenjak saya jaga pejabat ni dan ikut nasihat En AD (cari rezeki ikut arah mata angin) income di pejabat Kota Tinggi telah berubah. Ini semua berkat doa saya waktu mengerjakan ibadah haji, waktu doa power yang En AD bagi selalu tu dan arah mata angin yang betul.
