If you're unlucky in love, it may be your name that's the problem.
Researchers have found that your first name could have an effect on your love life and have come up with a list of unlucky and lucky names.
But local experts are sceptical about the accuracy of the research, which found that singles called Kevin had the toughest time.
The research found that those on dating websites were also less likely to pursue a relationship with someone called Mandy, Justin or Chantal, "because the names are all associated with trouble-making", the Daily Mail reported.
Daters named Jacob, Alexander, Charlotte, Emma, Hannah or Max were much more likely to have good luck, the researchers found. The results came from a study by psychologists at Berlin's Humboldt University who tested how often 47,000 dating site members opened messages from other singles.
The messages included only names, ages and postcodes and did not have a photo.
They found those from people with first names considered "less attractive" received significantly fewer clicks.
"Single people would seem to prefer to remain alone than meet up with someone called Kevin or Chantal," lead researcher Jochen Gebauer is reported as saying. Emails sent from an Alexander were clicked on 102 per cent more times than those from a Kevin, he said.
But twice-married Waiheke real estate agent Kevin Martin said the findings were "rubbish".
The 69-year-old says he has had a successful love life and said being called Kevin had only helped him.
"We're named after Saint Kevin - he's a travelling saint. I wouldn't say I've been unlucky at all."
Mr Martin was married to his first wife for 35 years and has been married to his second wife for 15 years. Neither woman was deterred by his name, he said.
Speed Date director Verity Molloy said some names could work against people because of personal connections or if they were considered old-fashioned.
"For example, 'I dated a Kevin and he was an idiot' - they would categorise someone like that, or 'Doris, that's a bit of a grandmother's name'."
Those with unusual names were often considered more interesting, a category she put the name Chantal into.
"It's an interesting, sexy name," she said.
But dating success did not hinge on a name - it was more about having a positive attitude.
The Company director Alan Reeves agreed.
"I find it difficult to believe that the name has any connection with how successful you are at dating."
More than 200 people attended its New Year Eve event and those with a good attitude fared best, he said: "There was a lot of love in the room and it was nothing to do with what their parents christened them."
Mr Reeves confessed he had never dated anyone with a name from the "worst" list.
Denise Corlett, founder of Dating Advice, helps singles wanting to find long-term partners.
For those creating an online account using a profile name, she advised steering away from online names that could have negative connotations.
"What you're trying to do is make that profile the best you can have and to attract the kind of person you want to be with. If you're not wanting sexual connotations stay away from names including 'sexy' or 'hot'," she said.
Two years ago, researchers at the University of Oldenburg conducted a study showing teachers showed prejudice against children with "lower class" names such as Kevin or Mandy, the Daily Mail said.

Police in Chatham-Kent, Ont., announced Wednesday that, of 1,986 people arrested so far this year, 203 were Aries, whereas just 139 were Sagittarius. It is the first time the municipality has ranked its crimes by Zodiac sign. Aries were the most arrested, with Libras in second at 189 arrests, and Virgo third at 183. The least criminal were Sagittarius (139 arrests), Aquarius (142) and Taurus (146).
"To provide an interesting astrological perspective, an algorithm was applied to all the arrestees' dates of birth," said a news release from the Chatham-Kent Police Service, whose 170 sworn officers patrol the largely rural municipality of rich farmland and of 110,000 residents that sprawls 2,400 square kilometres east of Windsor, Ont.
"Note: The Chatham-Kent Police Service does not ask an arrested person for their Zodiac sign – a simple calculation was used to create this list."
Criminologists and astrologists dismissed the list — released by the police on an otherwise slow day for both crime and news — as not comprehensive enough to portray any patterns of crime. Then again, so did the police department.
"You can't really read too much into it," says Const. Michael Pearce, a police spokesman, who used an Excell spreadsheet to classify the data. "I don't comment too much on the Zodiac stuff because I don't want any backlash about it. I am not drawing any conclusions about it."
Still, Georgia Nicols, who writes the National Post's horoscope, said that the results in Chatham-Kent make some sense.
"Aries is the sign of the warrior," said Ms. Nicols, speaking from her home on Bowen Island, off the coast of Vancouver. "Aries rules the military. Aries jump in head first, and love adventure. A lot of people in the newsroom are Aries."
Sagittarius stays out of the crime stats, she suggests, because "They don't get caught. They are smooth. They can talk anybody into anything."
Chatham-Kent placed 34th on Macleans magazine's recent ranking of Canada's most dangerous cities; Const. Pearce said that while violent crime is rare (he cannot remember the last murder), "we have a high number of break-and-enters in Chatham-Kent."
Still, a person's personality is tough is to generalize from just birth signs alone. Adolf Hitler was an Aries, but so are Celine Dion and Al Gore. Bruce Lee was a Sagittarius; so was Augusto Pinochet.
Janet Markham, studying for a master's degreee in cosmology from the University of Wales, said that, when it comes to criminals, a study comparing both the year of birth and birthdate would yield more clues than sun sign comparisons alone.
"I don't know how you would say that one sign is more aligned to criminality than another," she said. "If you are looking at criminals, you might be better to look at their whole horoscope."
Writing on Dailyhoroscope.com, for example, Jeff Jawer notes that serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, whose gruesome crimes included the murder and mutilation of at least 15 young men, was born on May 21, 1960, at 4:34 p.m. in Milwaukee. "He was a Gemini with the Sun in the 8th House of Sex and Death – two interests which were, unfortunately, closely linked in his life. His desires may have been twisted by potent Pluto's 90-degree square to his Sun, an angle of tension and mistrust."
Mass murderer Ted Bundy, was born on Nov. 24, 1946 at 10:35 p.m. in Burlington, Vermont, "with his Sun in fiery Sagittarius," Mr. Jawer notes. "The key to his pathological behavior appears to be the conjunction of potentially violent Mars with his Moon and Lunar South Node, all in Sagittarius. Uranus, the planet of estrangement, was opposite these three, reflecting his unstable childhood and violent streak."
Anne Massey, an astrologer in Surrey, B.C., has seen statistics suggesting that Cancers are most likely to be arrested, whereas the most law-abiding signs are Capricorn and Scorpio. She puts little stock in any of this, noting, "I really don't think the sun sign has anything to do with it because astrology is far more complex than that."
Dr. Anthony Doob, a professor of criminology at the University of Toronto, said, "I have no idea whether people born at particular times of the year are more likely to be arrested than anyone else. You would have to look at whether there is some consistency across time. My guess is that that, just from listening to the radio, there is not a whole lot going on anywhere, so someone produced this data."
Const. Pearce, who produced the data, concedes, "Next year the list could be completely different unless we arrest the same people."

Spanking could be harmful, study says.Spanking could harm your kid's psyche, claims a new study that has found a link between spanking and childhood aggression and depression.
The findings, published in the fall 2012 Journal of Family and Marriage by researchers Andrea Gromoske and Kathryn Maguire-Jack, looked specifically at the fallout from spanking kids under 1-year-old in a sample of 3,870 families across the country. They found it led to three-year-olds who were aggressive—hitting, screaming or having tantrums—and five-year-olds who were depressed or anxious...
A surprise in the new research, Gromoske told Shine, was that, while past research in this area had shown a direct relationship between spanking and depressive symptoms, she and Maguire-Jack found a more complex connection, or chain of events, with aggression at 3 and depression at 5. "It turned out that spanking was directly related to future aggressive behaviors," she explained, "and that increases in aggressive behaviors were related to increases in depressive behaviors." ....
"What we have here is another in a long line of research results proving that using physical violence on children is counterproductive in just about every imaginable respect," Kohn told Yahoo! Shine. "It teaches kids to be aggressive, to rely on power over those who are weaker, and to confuse loving with hurting."
